Master Regulators NFATc1, IRF1, and IRF2

Transcription factors are proteins that bind to DNA sequences and help regulate the expression levels of certain genes. NFATc1 (nuclear factor of activated T cells) belongs to a family of transcription factors that recognize the Rel domain. It plays a role in the inducible expression of cytokines (i.e., IL-2 and IL-4) in several cell types. IRF (interferon regulatory factor) 1 regulates several IFN-related genes upon induction by cytokines and other transcription factors. IRF2 competes with IRF1 for binding sites and inhibits IRF1's potentially proinflammatory downstream effects. Lorenzi et al. investigated the ability to destroy tumor cells by upregulating MHC I expression via IRF1 and NF-kB.
