RAD51 is a key protein in the homologous recombination (HR) pathway of DNA repair. Its primary function is to facilitate the search for homology and strand invasion during the repair of double-strand breaks, ensuring genomic stability. RAD51 activity is tightly regulated by post-translational modifications and interactions with accessory proteins such as BRCA2, which help load RAD51 onto single-strand DNA. Dysregulation of RAD51 is linked to cancer, since overexpression can promote resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, while loss of function leads to genomic instability and predisposition to hereditary cancers (e.g., BRCA-related breast and ovarian cancer).
